![]() Geronimo's Apache tribe attacked all who "dared to pass", but the Mexicans were the most hated by the Apaches as they killed Geronimo's mother, first wife and children. the Superstition Mountains are supposedly the home to the lost dutchman gold mines and Geronimo's favorite hide-out cave. HWY 88 is in the Superstition Mountains range. I found such a place along highway 88 northeast of Scottsdale. ![]() Be sure to bring plenty of ice and food because it'll take you at least 30 minutes to get anywhere from the campground.I wanted to find a place that was remote and would mirror the images from the old westerns, meaning deep canyons, rocky faces, winding roads with no guard rails, cloudless skies, cacti, intense heat, Akk Dogs, and possibly, Tusken Raiders (more commonly known as "sand people".all things digress back to star Wars). ![]() A lot of visitors stop at various scenic and historic spots along the way but don't continue onward to this remote campground. The nice thing about this campground is that it's located off of a winding, bumpy, dirt road which keeps the place feeling very isolated (no cell phone service!). We had to keep our dogs on leashes, but were able to take them swimming in the lake. By Easter weekend brought crowds that filled almost the entire campground, and a fair amount of noise in the evenings, but the campground is spread out along the lake so the long beach areas still didn't feel too crowded. The setting was really beautiful and on a weekday in the spring the place was nice and quiet. I recently went camping at one of the campgrounds run by the forest service (not the resort, the only facilities here are a boat launch, pit toilets, and a few water spigots) right on Apache Lake.
